The Panama Canal administrator stated on Wednesday that since October of last year, toll revenues have been decreasing by approximately $100 million per month. He added that if this trend continues, toll revenues may decrease by around $700 million by April.
The reason for the decline in revenue is the drought, which has forced canal administrators to implement shipping restrictions on this waterway with a history of over 100 years. This canal is a crucial global trade route connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
The fiscal year of the canal runs from October to September.
During a press conference, Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vasquez commented to reporters that the ongoing trend of decreasing toll revenues in the coming months is "possible." However, he added that despite this, there is still hope for the waterway to reach its revenue target set for the fiscal year, partly due to recently implemented toll increases.
